🏅G5 SUEN Wai Yan Natalie

This year marks the 10th anniversary of micro:bit, and while the global “do your :bit” challenge is taking place around the world, our students have been making an impact right here in Hong Kong. Under the theme “Applying micro:bit in Scientific Research,” Natalie developed an innovative Smart Waste Collection System using micro:bit and Elecfreaks hardware.🌍

Building on an ongoing STEAM School Team project focused on country park waste collection, she shifted the emphasis from mechanical design to the power of algorithms. By designing a smart route-optimisation system with real-time overflow monitoring and energy-efficient sensor logic, her project aims to keep public spaces cleaner while reducing the physical workload and stress on cleaning workers.💡

Her work directly supports two United Nations Sustainable Development Goals:

SDG 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy) through smart power management
SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities) by promoting cleaner, more efficient urban and park environments

With the dedicated guidance of her Math and STEAM teacher, Ms. Bella Cheung, Natalie spent many hours refining her program, preparing her presentation, and confidently answering the judges’ questions. The judging panel specifically praised her innovative approach in linking micro:bit coding with mathematical thinking.👏

Natalie’s achievement beautifully reflects the spirit of our STEAM education — using technology, algorithmic thinking, and empathy to solve real-world problems and support our community.🤖
