Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education (HKDSE)

HKBUAS offers the Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education (HKDSE) as its local senior secondary curriculum. The HKDSE is a widely recognised qualification accepted by local and overseas universities and employers. It prepares students for university admission through the Joint University Programmes Admissions System (JUPAS) and other pathways, while supporting whole-person development.

HKDSE Curriculum Structure

At senior grades (Grades 10–12), students study four core subjects together with a choice of elective subjects. The curriculum follows the Education Bureau’s Senior Secondary framework, optimised for the 2024 HKDSE and beyond.

  • Core subjects: Chinese Language, English Language, Mathematics (Compulsory Part), and Citizenship and Social Development (CSD).
  • Elective subjects (students typically take 3): Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Economics, Geography, History, Chinese History, Business, Accounting and Financial Studies (BAFS – Accounting or Business), Information and Communication Technology (ICT), Literature in English, Music, Physical Education, and Visual Arts.
  • Mathematics Extended Part (Module 1 or Module 2) is available for capable students according to interest and ability. General PE is also part of the school programme.

English is the medium of instruction for most subjects. Chinese Language and Chinese History are taught in Chinese, while Citizenship and Social Development may be offered in Chinese or English. Students receive guidance and consultation when selecting electives to align with their interests, strengths, and further study plans.

A comprehensive academic coaching and further studies programme supports HKDSE students from Grade 10 onwards, intensifying in Grade 12. The Further Studies Team provides personalised guidance so that students can make informed choices and maximise their university options.

3-Literacy

A-School emphasizes the cultivation of the 3-Literacy, which refers to English Language, Chinese Language and Information Technology. Students are expected to master these three important tools of communication across all subjects as well as in their daily life.

Language-Rich Environment

A-School aims to ensure all students are able to express themselves in English and Putonghua fluently and confidently. English is the medium of instruction of most subjects, while Putonghua is the main medium of instruction of Chinese Language. Students are encouraged to speak English and Putonghua around the campus. Fun-filled activities are regularly organised to provide more opportunities of applying these languages in daily school life. To gain professional recognition of language proficiency, students are encouraged to take part in international assessments like TOEFL, IELTS, IGCSE and GAPSK.

Various online learning platforms are available to extend learning beyond the classroom. Besides, students will learn to be a good digital citizen through different programmes so that they manage to use technologies safely and responsibly.

21st Century Teaching and Learning

Our curricula, programmes and pedagogies align with the latest educational trends and the manpower needs in the 21st Century. Students are given ample opportunities, resources, guidance and trust to develop themselves into self-directed and lifelong learners, together with the abilities to communicate, collaborate, innovate, solve problems and deal with adversities.

HKDSE graduates from HKBUAS consistently achieve results above territory averages and secure places at leading local and overseas universities, reflecting the strength of the curriculum and the support provided.
