Overview

The HKDSE Chemistry curriculum develops scientific literacy through the study of matter, its properties and transformations, and the relationship between matter and energy. Building on junior secondary Science, it combines chemical knowledge with practical inquiry and real-life applications, preparing students for further study, chemistry-related careers and lifelong learning.

Curriculum Goals

Phase Curriculum
Senior Secondary Compulsory Part
  • Understand atomic structure, bonding and the relationships between structures and properties.
  • Study planet Earth, metals, acids and bases, fossil fuels and carbon compounds.
  • Apply chemical calculations and explore redox reactions, chemical cells, electrolysis and energy changes.
  • Explain reaction rates, chemical equilibrium, carbon chemistry and patterns in the chemical world.
  • Use chemical language, evidence and logical reasoning to solve problems and explain everyday phenomena.
Senior Secondary Elective Part
  • Extend learning through two of three elective topics: Industrial Chemistry, Materials Chemistry and Analytical Chemistry.
  • Connect chemical principles with industrial processes, materials or analytical methods, according to the topics studied.
  • Explore green chemistry and evaluate the social, economic and environmental implications of chemical applications.
  • Develop critical thinking and informed decision-making through chemistry-related issues and problems.

Subject Highlights

Scientific inquiry is central to the curriculum. Alongside practical work, students undertake an Investigative Study in Chemistry to integrate knowledge and skills through planning investigations, collecting and analysing data, evaluating methods and communicating findings. The subject promotes safe laboratory practice, honest recording, collaboration and open-mindedness. Connections between science, technology, society and the environment help students assess chemistry-related issues and develop responsible citizenship.
