Chemistry
Overview
The International A-Level Chemistry curriculum follows the Pearson Edexcel specification and prepares students for further study in chemistry and related disciplines. It develops understanding of physical, inorganic and organic chemistry, from atomic structure and bonding to energetics, kinetics, equilibria, transition metals and organic synthesis. Sixteen core practical activities connect theory with experimental investigation, supported by mathematical reasoning and critical evaluation of evidence.
Curriculum Goals
By the end of this course, students will be able to:
- Explain chemical principles and connect ideas across physical, inorganic and organic chemistry.
- Apply chemical knowledge and mathematical methods to solve problems in familiar and unfamiliar contexts.
- Plan and carry out practical investigations safely, selecting appropriate apparatus and controlling variables.
- Analyse experimental data, assess uncertainties and evaluate methods to draw valid conclusions.
- Interpret chemical tests and spectroscopic evidence to identify substances and deduce molecular structures.
- Communicate scientific explanations clearly, using accurate chemical terminology, equations and conventions.
Key Skills Developed
- Quantitative Reasoning: Molar calculations, energetics, rates and equilibria; interpreting graphs; using units, significant figures and measurement uncertainties appropriately.
- Practical Investigation: Safe handling of chemicals and apparatus; titration, synthesis and purification; accurate observation, measurement and experimental planning.
- Analytical Problem Solving: Interpreting qualitative tests, mass spectra, infrared and NMR spectra; explaining reaction mechanisms and planning organic synthesis routes.
- Scientific Thinking and Communication: Evaluating evidence and experimental limitations; justifying conclusions; presenting data and laboratory reports using scientific language.
