Visual Arts / Arts and Design

Overview

The Pearson Edexcel GCE A Level Art and Design curriculum for the International Stream prepares students for the rigorous intellectual, creative, and technical demands of tertiary arts education and global creative industries. Spanning Grade 11 and Grade 12, the programme fosters independence, critical enquiry, and personal expression. Students engage in sustained practical investigations, critical contextual research, and continuous media experimentation, culminating in a comprehensive portfolio and externally set assignment that showcase their individual artistic identity.

Curriculum Goals

By the end of this course, students will be able to:

  • Demonstrate deep intellectual, imaginative, and intuitive capabilities in conceptualizing and realizing original fine art projects.
  • Conduct sustained and focused contextual investigations (AO1), critically analyzing historical, contemporary, and cross-cultural art movements to inform personal practice.
  • Explore, select, and master a wide variety of fine art media, materials, techniques, and digital processes (AO2), continuously reviewing and refining ideas as work develops.
  • Record primary observations, insights, and research using high-level visual and written notation (AO3), utilizing digital and physical sketchbooks effectively.
  • Produce a substantial continuous written Personal Study (1,000–3,000 words) that demonstrates critical evaluation and explicit connections between personal artwork and contextual sources.
  • Present personal, meaningful, and fully realized final outcomes (AO4) within controlled timeframes and exhibition settings.

Key Skills Developed

  • Practical & Media Mastery: Rigorous exploration across fine art disciplines, including drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpture, mixed media, digital manipulation, and lens-based media; refinement of technical precision, formal elements, and material experimentation.
  • Contextual Literacy & Research: Analytical interpretation of visual culture, art history, and theoretical frameworks; synthesizing primary and secondary research into structured critical writing and a formal Personal Study essay.
  • Critical Inquiry & Self-Refinement: Ongoing evaluative practice; recording, reviewing, and modifying creative processes; developing independence of mind, problem-solving skills, and self-directed project management.
  • Portfolio Curation & Presentation: Selecting, editing, and curating physical sketchbooks, digital portfolios, and final exhibition pieces to communicate visual intentions clearly to academic and professional audiences.
