Geography
Overview
The GCE A-level in Geography curriculum is designed to move students past basic geographic knowledge and into complex, critical, and analytical thinking. The goals emphasize understanding the interactions between physical processes and human activity, evaluating real-world challenges, and mastering synoptic thinking.
Curriculum Goals
By the end of this course, students will be able to:
- Explore the world, interconnections between people and environments, and contemporary issues like climate change and globalization.
- Build deep conceptual understanding of Earth's physical systems (such as coasts, rivers, and tectonics) and human landscapes (urban, rural, and economic activities).
- Promote investigative learning through mandatory primary data collection (quantitative and qualitative) and secondary source analysis.
Key Skills Developed
- Fieldwork & Investigation: Designing research questions and sampling strategies; collecting primary data (e.g., beach profiling, pebble sizing, pedestrian counts); evaluating data limitations, anomalies, and reliability.
- Literacy & Argumentation: Structuring extended, evidence-based essays; critically evaluating conflicting viewpoints on geopolitical or environmental issues; sing specialized geographical terminology accurately.
- Evidence-Based Evaluation: Training students to construct multi-scalar arguments (local to global), analyze resource booklets under exam conditions, and make substantiated judgments regarding sustainability and risk management.
