G8 student Brindy Mason won the gold medal in the ASJJF Dumau Manila International No-Gi Championship

The sports territory of our School has gone further! G8 Brindy Mason, the passionate female Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) player, won the gold medal in the Asian Sports Jiu-Jitsu Federation Dumau Manila International No-Gi Championship 2018 in the Philippines in late November.

The 14-year-old attained the 1st place in the Sport Jiu Jitsu International Federation World Jiu-jitsu Championship in California in the US, spurring on her determination to excel herself in the Filipino round a month later. Brindy usually participates in under-16 events, but in the No-Gi Championship she had to battle against opponents three to four years older than her in the under-18 category. Nevertheless, Brindy managed to pull her best and took the title home. 

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is yet to gain popularity in Hong Kong. Brindy represented New Zealand instead of Hong Kong at the Filipino game as Hong Kong does not have a national BJJ team for the time being.   She hopes to help set up a regional BJJ team in Hong Kong in future. The combatting sports is commonly perceived as a boys’ game. Brindy had a hard time enjoying the martial arts since her first practice on her 11th birthday. Frustrated by the lack of support from the community, Brindy’s love for BJJ reignited her passion and took her further.
