Quantum Computing for Gifted Students Project Showcase

News date

We are excited to share with you that 12D KAM Chin Cheung, Anson completed the “Quantum Computing for Gifted Students” programme between July 2023 and January 2024, which is an off-school advanced learning programme funded by the Gifted Education Fund and organized by the Department of Physics, the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST). The students project showcase presentation was held at HKUST on Feb 3, 2024.

The programme aimed at introducing the basics of quantum computing as early as possible to exceptionally gifted students in secondary school.

Anson carried out research on the topic of “Quantum Facial Recognition / Edge Detection” with four other gifted students from various secondary schools. In the project, they used a hybrid quantum-classical convolutional neural network to perform facial recognition. The quantum circuit was used to extract features from the images, and the classical neural network was used to classify the images. Students generated their own dataset and tested the model.

We are thrilled that Anson had the opportunity to develop his interest and talents in the world of quantum computing.  We look forward to witnessing more and more A-School students to excel in the fields of their research interests and become future young leaders in innovation and technology.
